Bowen family papers, 1811-1874.

The collection includes transcripts of letters to and about Dinah Field Bowen (1746-1835) written during the years 1811 to 1835 and transcripts of letters between Lieutenant Charles Bowen (b. 1787) and his wife Esther Houghton Bowen (b. 1794) and other family members during the years 1811 to 1835. These letters include several from Lucy Bowen (b. 1814) regarding revivals, a broken engagement and a description of her new fiance, James R. Langdon of Montpelier. The collection also includes a short autobiographical sketch of Charles Bowen, a diary of Esther Houghton Bowen from 1812 to 1818 with a partial transcript, diaries of Sarah Bowen Springer (b. 1818), daughter of Charles and Esther Bowen, from 1842 to 1843 and 1848 to 1850, letters written by Sarah Bowen Springer to her parents describing her experiences as assistant principal at York Female Seminary, York, Pennsylvania during the years 1838 to 1843; and a small group of letters from Sarah Bowen to John Springer dated 1845.
